Dark matter is that type of matter which is present everywhere in the Universe. It is hypothesized in cosmology for those accounts which are the direct effect of mass but no such mass can be seen. It cannot be seen with naked eyes or using telescopes, it neither emits radiation nor absorbs it. It is hypothesized to be non reactant to radiations. Much like black holes its presence can only be visualized by observing the surrounding effects due to its presence i.e. gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation and on the large scale universe.
It was firstly hypothesized by Jan Oort (a pioneer in Radio Astronomy) as the discrepancies in the mass of the large objects (galaxy, etc..) determined by their gravitational effects and the mass calculated by the visible objects (stars, planets, etc..).
